An Prediction Market Trader Profited $436K from Wagers on Venezuela's Political Shift.

A bettor profited close to $500,000 on the ouster of Venezuela's president shortly prior to it was officially announced, leading to inquiries about potential gains made from inside knowledge of the US operation.

Changing Odds in Forecasts

Bets placed on the crypto-platform, an online prediction market, that Nicolás Maduro would be out of power by the end of January surged in the period preceding President Donald Trump announced on the weekend that Maduro had been seized.

A single trader, which joined the platform last month and took four positions, all on Venezuela, profited a total of $436,000 from a modest bet of $32,537.

It remains unclear. The user had only a blockchain identifier for identification.

Market Signals Before News Break

Market statistics shows that users estimated the likelihood of a political change at just 6.5% in the afternoon of the Friday before the event.

But the odds had climbed to over 10% by shortly before midnight and surged in the first hours of Saturday, indicating a rapid movement in positions immediately prior to the public announcement was made.

"That trade has all the signs of a transaction based on inside information," stated a financial reform advocate.

A handful of other traders also earned large payouts from bets on the same outcome.

Legal Questions Intensifies

Some lawmakers are starting to take note.

A bill presented on the start of the week would prevent federal workers from making trades on prediction markets if they have "confidential government knowledge" related to a market.

This sector faced scrutiny under the Biden administration. However it has received a warmer welcome during the Trump presidency.

Trading on insider information is a crime in the stock market, but there are fewer regulations in the prediction market industry.

An official representative for a competing service said their site "explicitly prohibits trading on insider information of any form."
