Together Is Now Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Relationship.

Consider this a test for long-term couples who are fans of the horror genre: Get comfortable with your significant other and stream Together. This 2025 indie hit just made its launch on a streaming platform on Hulu. At first glance, it could look like conventional body horror, but inside Together resides a intense meditation about our choices in loving our partners.

A Directorial Debut Investigating The Nuances of Love

Together is the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, partners that have stayed together for over ten years. United in marriage in real life in 2017, Franco and Brie contribute a unique chemistry to their characters, masterfully depicting both the joys and frustrations of a long-term relationship.

The story commences when the couple transition from the urban environment to the countryside for Millie’s job. A commonly used story element, sure, but that’s primarily where the cliches cease. Together transforms into as much a examination of mental states of the pair’s relationship as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Paranormal Spark

While walking near their rural residence, a violent storm occurs, and Millie and Tim fall into an hole in the earth. After a night spent there and eventually escaping, a strange force begins influencing the couple. This force compels a supernatural closeness between them that goes far beyond emotional intimacy.

The entire film is a gradually intensifying of scares, blending moments of fever-dream horrors, gross (but tastefully done) body horror, and authentically humorous interactions (sometimes in the middle of something grotesque). The director orchestrates these parts expertly and wraps them up in a slowly mounting aura of dread.

Complex Characterizations

A significant portion of Together is solely the two lead actors, and they skillfully illustrate countless layers to the partnership at the film's core. Millie’s confidence and feeling of intimacy is suffering due to a lack of intimacy. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his reluctance to pursue anything but his floundering music career inexorably rises.

In contrast, Tim's character feels trapped and separated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve moved to the country and distant from his network of friends. He dreads the notion of completely losing his individual identity in Millie. This fear is intensified by the circumstance he does not operate a vehicle and needs Millie for transportation.

The director's cleverest decision is that he refrains from painting one partner or the other the definite antagonist.

Tim and Millie grapple with the sort of issues that come with long-term unions after ten years. At their core, they continue to care for one another. They find humor with each other, comfort one another, and open up at times. But under the surface, there’s an inescapable current of uncertainty about their bond.

Allegory and Meaning

While the paranormal elements in Together symbolize these concerns of codependency and giving oneself over to another person, the symbolism avoids being clumsy or self-important. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments offer a perfect parallel to the relationship narrative. Both the supernatural and the personal work together in harmony.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s ending, which won’t be spoiled here, has sparked debate on the story's concluding statement about enmeshed dynamics. Reports indicate that unattached audience members have seen the movie as a compelling reason for avoiding commitment. Conversely, some couples who were in conflict found that the film actually helped them make up.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own reaction could potentially serve as a revealing measure of how you perceive partnership. Will the finale plant feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you identify in one of the characters and feel frustration, or simply look at your other half and say, “We could get through that together”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an exploration you can experience right now.

Together is available to watch on Hulu as of this moment.
